The Last Man eBook James Bailey

"The Last Man" by James Bailey is a short story that takes place far in the future when the universe is burning out and only one man is left to pilot the ship that has one thousand people on it who are in a state of stasis until a new place to live can be found. Each star in the universe is dying off and Elim is in search of a star that looks green on his screen. Green would indicate that it might support life.

Elim, at last, thinks he has found a new home for him and his people, but in order to be sure he communicates with a people who say they have lived there for 15,000 years and welcome Elim and his ship's passengers.

This is a good story, despite the need for editing. I enjoyed it but it did seem a little brief and I would have enjoyed reading more. The outcome of this story is one that is a bit surprising, but no spoilers here. Sci-fi readers will enjoy this.

The Last Man eBook James Bailey Reviews

Elim is piloting a ship through the depths of space, as his species has left a dead world in search of life elsewhere. Carrying a thousand people via stasis tubes - effectively freezing them in time - and having traveled for thousands of years, resources are low and hope is dwindling. According to the ship's monitors, there are few habitable planets left, but Elim is rejuvenated when he eventually finds signs of life. Bailey does an excellent job of building the story to its eventual climax. The ending, however, falls a little flat. While I am fine with the way the story resolves itself, and it may catch some readers by surprise, I found it to be fairly predictable. Also, given the length of the journey and how much focus Bailey places on it, the ending seems rushed. I would have loved to see it drag out longer, giving the reader a false sense of security in the process. In any event, this is a well-written story that satisfied me for the most part.
I could overlook the fact that it just ended.......but the writing was atrocious. Missed punctuation, sentences poorly constructed and a lack of continuity left me rather happy it was short. I wish the author good luck and hope he finds a decent editor.
A short story showcasing the future of humanity as they begin to revert back to their primal state in order to survive. I loved it.
This is a great story to read during your lunch break at work. To just boil it all down, I really enjoyed this story and I could see it as the outline of a full-length novel. While the story is technically a science fiction story, you don't have the aliens, weaponry, etc. you have in a lot of science fiction the story revolves around one man, desperate for a place for his people to live. The last third of the story has you a little on the edge and, without having a spoiler, the author puts a neat little twist I didn't see coming. If you're looking for a "perfect" ending as the other reviews of this story were searching for, you will be disappointed. Life isn't about happy endings, and the author (to me) did a good job.

This is a nice compilation to read during your lunch break at work (which is what I did), and the it takes about 10-15 minutes total to read. As I type this review, the version is being offered for free - grab it now before it has a price on it. I'm looking forward to reading more from James Bailey.
This story was very good considering how short it was. But in the end I did very much enjoy it. If you want a really good short story this is it. Yes I will recommend this to friends
All I could say at the end was "WOW" For a short story it really packed a punch. As the story goes along, the author makes this pilot seem like he's someone you would want as a friend and would trust completely. I became so attached to this character that at the end I was so angry at the way he had been misled to believe they were all saved and then to have had it all yanked out in a flash. I am still angry! I loved it and will probably remember this story for many years to come. I would highly recommend this story to anyone who loves a good story. Kudos to James Bailey!!!!
There is something to be said about a writer who knows when to end a story. In The Last Man, Elim is put in an unenviable task find a planet that is hospitable to his race. At stake is merely the continuation of his civilization.

The story takes place at a time when the universe is slowly dying, taking along stars and planets with it. Elim's home planet has long perished, and he pilots a spacecraft carrying a thousand of his people in stasis. The author appropriately focuses on the burden that Elim endures, the pressure that he faces to find a suitable planet for his people, and also the isolation that Elim feels as the only person awake on the life pod.

The story ends on a surprising but rather appropriate note.
